Our medical group was founded in 1978 when Dr. Charles Gruenwald, Jr. and Dr. Michael Teague formed their initial partnership following completion of their plastic surgery residencies in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The two partners opened their practice in Baton Rouge and were actively involved in providing a full range of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery services to patients throughout the area. The practice of the two young surgeons was, in its early years, principally focused on reconstructive surgery – which included providing patients with some of the most current surgical treatment techniques then available in their field.
In 1985, following years of steady growth, Dr. Ann Reilley joined the practice as a young associate. She subsequently became the first board certified female plastic surgeon in Louisiana in December 1988.
The practice was relocated to a new, modern clinical facility that the partners constructed in 1988. This facility was built to provide patients with the option of surgery in an outpatient setting, along with the added benefits of lower costs, greater privacy and reduced recovery time.
The practice continued its dramatic growth, resulting in the addition of a fourth partner in July 1994, when Dr. Gary Cox joined the group. With the addition of Dr. Cox, the practice was able to provide a full spectrum of plastic surgery procedures, including microsurgery, microsurgical breast reconstruction and hand surgery. Associates in Plastic Surgery also gained the distinction of becoming the largest plastic surgery group in the state.
A fifth surgeon joined the group in March 1998, when Dr. John A. Dean was added as a partner. He spent his first five years in Baton Rouge as the plastic surgeon for the Ochsner Clinic. In addition to cosmetic surgery, Dr. Dean brought additional excellence to the practice resources with his extensive reconstructive surgery background and broadened the coverage the practice could offer in microsurgery and hand surgery.
After the departure of Dr. Gruenwald, in February 2010, the practice welcomed New Orleans native, Dr. Andrew C. Freel, in July 2011. Dr. Freel brings to the practice his extensive knowledge and training in DIEP flap reconstruction and microsurgery. He performs breast reconstruction surgery using the most advanced techniques. His experience in breast reconstruction surgery has allowed him to develop into a skilled surgeon for cosmetic procedures of the breast and body.
Following the retirements of Dr. Reilley and Dr. Teague in 2015, the practice welcomed Michigan native, Dr. Jenna M. Bourgeois, in August 2017. Dr. Bourgeois is a graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine and she completed her integrated Plastic Surgery residency training at the University of California Irvine. Her special interests are cosmetic surgery of the breast, body, and face and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer, skin cancer, and facial injuries.
In keeping with its commitment to providing the highest quality care, Associates in Plastic Surgery completed a major renovation and building project in 1999. This endeavor created greatly expanded surgical facilities, new business offices and state-of-the-art computer networks. Today – as in the past – our practice continually strives for excellence in the level of patient care we provide, while also building strong relationships with the patients we are privileged to serve.
