Procedures That Can Be Included in a Mommy Makeover
Tummy Tuck: Also called abdominoplasty, this popular procedure helps to remove excess fat and skin from the stomach. This procedure can improve stretch marks on the lower abdomen as well. After removing the excess fat and skin, the sagging abdominal muscles are tightened using internal sutures. The belly button may also be repositioned.
Liposuction: Stubborn fat deposits can accumulate in areas such as the thighs, hips, and flanks. These areas cannot be improved through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction is used to restore shape and contours to the body by removing this fat. First, tumescent fluid is injected, which causes the fat cells to swell and loosen. A cannula is then inserted into these areas to suction out the fat.
Breast Augmentation: In this procedure, the volume of the breasts is increased using FDA-approved breast implants. The size of the incisions will depend on the amount of augmentation. The implants may be placed under or above the pectoral musculature. The breast implant type chosen (silicone or saline) will depend on the patient’s needs and goals.
Breast Lift: Mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, treats uneven, sagging, or flat breasts. The pattern of the incisions will depend on the amount of excess tissue that must be removed. Often, the nipple and areola have to be repositioned. At the end of the surgery, the remaining skin is tightened and the incisions are closed.
Breast Lift with Implants: In cases where the breasts have lost volume and shape, a breast augmentation may be combined with a breast lift for a procedure called augmentation mastopexy. This restore breast size while addressing sagging.
Breast Reduction: During pregnancy, a woman’s breasts swell up in both shape and size. This can lead to issues such as neck and back pain, breathing difficulties, rashes, and posture problems. Breast reduction resolves these issues by removing excess glandular and fatty tissue and excess skin. The remaining skin is tightened.
What to Expect During a Mommy Makeover
Patients undergoing a mommy makeover will be given general anesthesia. The surgeon will make the necessary incisions with artful concealment to complement the patient’s anatomy. They will then make the desired changes.
Performing the combination of procedures generally takes three to five hours. The surgeon may use multiple methods of closure for different incisions. The patient can expect a protective dressing over each incision that must stay dry until removed, usually one to two days following surgery. Drains may be placed to remove any excess fluid.
What to Expect After a Mommy Makeover
Patients should plan a recovery period of three to six weeks with a gradual return to restricted activities. As is the case after any surgery, temporary swelling, bruising, and moderate pain are common and are managed with rest and pain medication if needed.
Restrictions from smoking, driving, strenuous activity, bathing, hot tubs, and swimming should be carefully followed. This will help to avoid complications such as infections or slow incision healing.
